it's really fun that you can customize your own smoothie or juice ! I got a custom 4 ingredient smoothie today ! It was not very thick in consistency - which i was pretty bummed about especially since i was talking to the guy who made it about this. I picked banana, then the strawberries & raspberries (were organic & frozen .. i would have hoped for fresh fruit), and soy yogurt + water. It was good but not 7$ worth. I got a great demo at the market on Oasis Hummos !

Cafe Verde is located within the People's Food Co-op so I found myself a table and enjoyed some grub from the hot-bar. After I finished my meal I wanted/needed a cup of coffee before heading to my hotel to check-in. There were a few people in front of me in line, which usually isn't a big deal...but it was the slooooowweeessst moving line I've ever encountered. By the time I ordered I needed about 4 cups of coffee! They weren't much faster when it came to making the coffee and they didn't have any sugar free syrups, which was oh so disappointing.

What more can be said. Great coffee, a fabulous Blueberry Coffee Cake, and great people watching. Lot's of people enjoying dinner off the hot bar which seemed to be very reasonably priced. The service was top notch to boot.

Good variety of pastry options. The Cappuccino is overpriced and not the best I ever had.

I love Cafe Verde's hot bar and that is the main reason I go there. The food doesn't usually have a lot of 'spice' like salt or pepper but sometimes it's refreshing to taste the 'real' flavors of food. For example, the steamed kale is just that and only that. No extra herbs or olive oil, just kale. They almost always have this as a staple along with brown rice, tofu and a salad bar. You can find the monthly menu on their website so you can go on days when they have your favorite entree (mine is the turkey meatloaf). For sweets, you can grab a cupcake or macaron with delicious flavors that your typical bakery doesn't have (like cardamom & basil). I tried one of their cupcakes and it was loaded! Very heavy in weight and sugar (1/3 of the cupcake was frosting). Even after taking off most of the frosting, it was still too sweet for me but if you're into that sort of thing, these may be the treats for you! The smoothies and fresh raw juices are so-so. Nothing that gets the taste buds dancing but it's nutritious and they blend them up for you fast so it's nice if you're in a hurry. The coffee is 'ethical' and the staff are always friendly and helpful. This place is an integral part of Kerrytown and a great place to go for those who want to relax or for those who want to eat wholesome food on the go.

I use this place to do my computer catch-up and toastmaster speech writing on Sunday mornings. A Spicy Mocha and the ambiance are very condusive to relaxing and being creative. I have also had some great talks with other patrons, even a cribbage game. If you get hungry they have a nice breakfast/lunch/salad bar along with a display case full of delicious looking pastries. Finally, easy access to grocery shopping at the People's Food Co-op before I go home.

This spot is what a cafe should be. Sleek but still warm, with brick walls dashed in colorful trim and wood. The set up invites conversation only if you want it with the steady trickle of 'A squared' bohemians, students and businessmen keeping it diverse. The college baristas serve quality coffee drinks along side a deep stocked treat selection. Fair trade products will nick your tab a bit for the good cause. Head just into the grocery store for a healthy hot food bar and salad bar for lunch or dinner. Of course it has internet, but the all year long water jug and cups are a nice touch to help you avoid the dreadful coffee breath and stay hydrated. Cafe Verde is my coffee shop jam when in A2.

The red-headed step-child of the People's Food Co-Op grocery next door, this puppy has become Cinderella for my supping and imbibing needs. When pressed for time and in the area, this is where I come for ready meals. The 'hot lunch' area in the back is fairly consistent and unchanging as far as its offerings: tofu, grilled chicken, steamed kale, mac and cheese, rice, soup, salad. So going here more than once a week is downright mundane. But getting a plate full of rice, tasty organic chicken breast, salad, and some kale for under 6 bucks is quite a deal in Ann Arbor. Healthful. Sating. Tasty. Easy Peasy. Don't forget to weigh your plate so they can subtract it off your total weight (otherwise it can add an extra buck or two to your total - not fun). The espresso here is not shabby. I've yet to try the desserts or the smoothies, though they offer both. The interior has that earthy, warm health-food-granola-feel but people here are more hippy than yuppy which lends itself to a mellow atmosphere (not pushy and uptight a la Whole Foods). There are some regulars that come here on certain days and times so if you want a neighborhood-Cheers-like experience, you may be able to find it here.

Only guaranteed FAIR TRADE spot in Ann Arbor. Free wifi, decent seating, good Kerrytown location. They usually have a great selection of snacks/sandwiches and they make great smoothies (green smoothies too). It supports the People's Food Co-op so it's going to a good cause. Never had a bad experience with staff so I can't complain.

Fine coffee drinks and baked goods, not amazing but definitely not bad. Love the hot food bar and People's Food Co-Op in general! A nice place to sit and study or catch up with a friend thats on my list of coffee spots I like in A2.

Great juice, limited food options. The service was quick. There is a hot bar in the store connected to the juice bar but I didn't go over there. I had the Energy Bomb (add kale) and it was a tasty treat! The place seemed busy with lots of people on their computers or chatting with friends. If I lived here, I would definitely be back!

Food from the hot bar and grab-n-go cooler is dependably good and well labeled, though not cheap. My one complaint is that the baristas have terrible taste in music. Seriously. They play awful "customers go home" music far too often.

I generally like Verde. They have good-sized tables for doing work, free WiFi, and tasty snacks. Unfortunately, they do not know how to make a café americano. If that's what you're looking for, try coaching the barista through it, order something different, or head elsewhere.

Thai iced tea wasn't on the menu, but I asked if they could make me one. "Sure!" said the overly energetic guy waiting on me. Yeah. It was just regular iced tea. Bummer.

My first time in Ann Arbor came a few months ago when I was sent to manage an event in Detroit. I've always heard it's a great town, so I was excited to pass through and check things out. I did a search and came across Cafe Verde (good name) amongst coffee shops and cafes. When I read that Cafe Verde offered fair trade coffee, I knew it would be a good place to visit. It was a Sunday, early afternoon and the cafe was bustling. A lot of families and students drinking hot beverages and eating brunch from the hot food bar. Cool place with excellent coffee and a delicious food bar with loads of veggie choices, all at a good price. Unfortunately, with all the people hangin' for eats, this meant there was no where to sit. We didn't stay long because my meat eating boyfriend was craving something more 'substantial'. In the future, this is a cafe that I hope to return to. It's certainly my kind of place! Definitely recommend it to those that love good coffee, pastries and veggie foods.

I work nearby, so I visit Cafe Verde at least once a week for lunch. 90% of the time, I'm pretty happy with the food from the Hot Bar/Salad Bar and the refrigerated section. There are almost always three hot soup choices - chicken, vegetarian, and vegan options; I usually opt for the veggie or vegan, and they're usually quite flavorful. They have a different hot main dish every day, again with both a meat and veggie option. My biggest complaint is that the brown basmati rice (which they have nearly every day) isn't always cooked thoroughly. The last time I got rice, it was crunchy... and since I always take my food to go, I suffered through the toothache (I'm a real trooper, I know) because I was just THAT hungry. I've also ordered fresh juices, which are always delicious. Overall, the food's good enough that I keep coming back...

Located right next to the People's Food Co-op! you can eat whatever you got at the co-op or you can just sit around with your fair trade coffee and use the free internet. Great food at the bar so its fun to just grab some soup, crackers and enjoy reading. The meals here are interesting and a bit different from your normal hot/cold food bar. You can also get it prepackaged (its super fresh) and have sandwiches and what not. There is only one cashier and the lines are never long. I wish the atmosphere was better and more like zingerman's (happy, perky, and nice) but often it can be better. Its a great place but I rather just sit around the area (zingerman's).

Nice place. Free internet and plenty of plugs for the working and studying crowd. The coffee is so-so. One bonus is that is is part of a high-end "health-food" market that has self-serve entrees that you can eat in the cafe. If you've got a crowd of people who do and do not want to eat out and/or meet for coffee then everybody's dreams come true at Cafe Verde. This place has it all. It's not really special in any way beyond the attached market, but it is a reasonable place to chill and chat or get some work done when in Kerrytown. Update: I've downgraded the shop because they close early on Sundays. And because an hour before they closed they started to clean the grill and hence filled the place with putrid eye-burning smoke. I asked if I could prop the door open and the clerk said "It's a health code violation." And giving your customers black lung isn't a health code violation?!? And one time the power went out and they instantly forced everybody to get out. No apologies, no finish your coffee and leave, just GO AWAY! Bullshit. On a good day this place is nice, on a bad day you're better off drinking your coffee in a dark mine shaft.

This review is mostly on behalf of me and my coworkers at Bellanina Day Spa right across the street. Cafe Verde is our number one go-to spot for breakfast and lunch. As part if the Peoples Food Co-Op, the selection for healthy meals is endless. The spinach bagel is a personal breakfast favorite. For lunch, some of the girls highly recommend the soup and salad bar. The employees are always chipper and the dining area is always packed which can only mean this is a town favorite.

This is a review for smoothies since that's basically the only thing I ever come here for: the smoothies are AWESOME. Delicious, fresh and filling. I think there's a smoothie chain place in the same courtyard, so if you're looking for a creamy, fruity drink, head here instead of there.

This is another great remote office, hooray! It's not secret that it's convenient -- I feel like that's part of why it can get pretty crowded and hard to stake out a table. Still, even when it's crowded, it never gets too loud. Other people have realized that having a hot-bar (technically located within the Peoples Food Co-op) nearby, as well as quality coffee and chai (yum!), is a winning combination. The hot bar food can be a bit warmed over at times, but is always healthy, and clearly labeled with ingredients for those who are vegan or have particular food allergies. Soups are generally good, and prices reasonable for the portion size. It's also great to grab your bevie or food and sit outside the co-op/Verde if you're feeling in need of more rays. As some folks have mentioned, parking right outside can be a bit of a challenge, but if you're on foot or bike, it's an easy walk from pretty much anywhere downtown. If you are travelin' on 4 wheels, it's easiest just to park in the residential neighborhoods a few blocks away if you strike out on street or lot parking. After all, you're headed someplace healthy -- don't be daunted by a little walkin'!

Eh. The coffee is okay I suppose. I'm all about fair trade, but what makes this place not so great in my book is the service. It's always really slow and the baristas look like they either have no idea what they're doing or that they hate life. They are all a little pretentious and kind of short with customers. The food coop on the other hand is great. I love everything about it.

Yay! I found out about this place today from a friend. What could be better than fair trade coffee, nice snacks/sandwiches, a salad bar with delicious ingrediants, AND a grocery store? I only wish I'd found out about Cafe Verde right when I moved in as opposed to right when I'm leaving. Definitely a very pleasant atmosphere for working in.

This is a great little cafe right next to the co-op. It's a cozy cafe with long wooden bench seating and table seating. It's a great place to meet with your friend or do some work on your laptop since you can access wi-fi here. They have good fair-trade coffee. And some of the desserts are really great. They offer vegan desserts too. My favorite thing to get is this mocha chocolate cake (I can never remember the exact name) that has bits and pieces of sweet chocolate crunchy things. It's really good and you get such a large piece you can definitely share with someone. If some one wants a meal they have sandwiches and a salad/food bar in the back.

Cafe Verde is attached to/part of People's Food Co-op, which means that the food is excellent, healthy, and not in danger of oppressing anyone! Great place for coffee and yummy food.

Best fresh juice in town. As health foodie oriented as A2 is with its 2 Whole Foods, Plum Market, Trader Joe's etc... there aren't many places you can get good organic freshly juiced fruit and veggie drinks. Cafe Verde in the People's Food Coop is the best place for fresh juice in town. I really like to add ginger for a zesty twist. The hot bar in the Coop is also one of the few places you can get good steamed kale, warmed chicken and brown rice. The tofu is really good ( I love tofu).

Good fair trade coffee. Makes me happy. Beyond the coffee, its meh. The cafe anyway. The grocery was a whole other story. Baked goods aren't bad from what I've sampled but they're also not to die for or anything, so kind of a wash. I do value a good coffee though (Seattle... hello!?) so bonus for them. The ambience was what sort of turned me off from Cafe Verde. It was crowded in here and full of pretension in the air. Huh?

Dear Cafe Verde/PFC, While I appreciate the fact that you are the only cafe in Ann Arbor with a mature, aesthetically pleasing lighting design that combines natural light with warm, unintrusive supplemental light in a relatively pleasant space, I must take issue with your salad bar and prepared food in general. Many in the culinary world find it advantageous to utilize a spice known as salt in order to enhance the flavor of many dishes. It is with sheer encouragement that I advise you to include said spice in your soups. Without it, they are mostly just heated broth. Your vegan pumpkin chocolate chip muffins on the other hand have influenced my decision to no longer cringe at the phrase "vegan pumpkin chocolate chip muffin." That said, I would be extremely interested in tasting a version with actual butter. Best Wishes for the cold, dismal winter to come, Patrick

This is a cute place, but parking isn't always easy. It's also little pricey, but that's because it's attached to the local food cooperative, and their offerings tend to be organic. The people watching is fun, and that's always a plus in a cafe for me. The vegan brownie and coffee I had the last time I visited were good as well. It's nice that the cafe is attached to the Food Coop, so you can do your shopping and then stop for coffee, or go there to read a book and eat a pastry and the pick up a few groceries on your way out.

Cafe Verde is the healthy lunch/cafe right adjacent to the Fourth St. Co-op. It's been a "green"business way before the term existed. It has a lot of wheat-free and sugar-free goodies, as well as great smoothies and coffee (from what my friend tells me since I'm not a coffee drinker). My one complaint is that they don't clean their tables off and so it's difficult to find a clean one! In the back they sell certain goods as well, which is kind of novel, but I think this is due to their attachment (there's a little walk thru) to the grocery story co-op. It's also near the outdoor market, so if you're there on a W/Sat., stop by the outdoor and Kerrytown Market.

I really enjoy coming to Cafe Verde because it is one of the few baby friendly cafes out there. "Baby friendly" includes having access to baby food right in the building! It happens to be part of the People's Food Co-op. They also have changing tables in their bathroom that seem to be regularly cleaned -- a rarity in general. I'm usually changing my son on a grimey table worried that he might catch someone else's diaper rash. I enjoy their smoothies, especially the Emerald Pineapple, which has Spirulina in it. I didn't know what Spirulina was until I had that smoothie, and now I am all about it. I also enjoy many of their baked goods. If you're broke, they offer half versions of their sandwiches. I enjoy the pesto tomato. If they have nothing of interest, they let you eat stuff from the hot bar in the cafe.
